Unions are concerend about "bullying"

The management at British Airways have been accused of “bullying” by the unions that are fighting on behalf of 40,000 staff at BA who are being asked to comply with a number of cost saving incentives. Last week BA’s 3,235 pilots agreed to take wage cuts and consider working longer hours, these measures alone will save the airline £26 million annually. The pilots would be issued with £13 million worth of airline shares in three years time. Other staff members have asked to consider measures such as taking unpaid leave for up to a year and considering switching from full time employment to part time.

A national officer for Unite, Steve Turner, said “While we support means to mitigate redundancy, workers were sent intimidating e-mails from senior managers, which we believe put pressure on staff to volunteer for one to the changes BA proposed, otherwise they would get a meeting with a manager” He went on to say “This bullying and constant harassment of our members is unacceptable and will not be tolerated”

The airline has made a loss of £401 million in the year to March 2009 and represents the worst trading conditions for the company in 25 years. The reasons for the losses have been put down to fuel costs and a huge decline in demand for high cost business and first class air travel.

Willy Walsh, the chief executive of BA, has offered to forgo one month’s salary in July which would save the company £62,000.
