British Airways looks at further charges to stem losses

British Airways have been heavily criticised for its decision to add extra costs to tickets if passengers wish to reserve a particular seat. The cost to a family of four who wish to sit together on a long haul flight could be as much as £80 each way. The £400 million loss suffered by BA in the past financial year has put the airline under severe strain and it is said to be fighting for its life. The charges will start at £10 for a short haul economy flight and £20 for a long haul flight with a predicted rise to £60 for a Club World seat a seat with extra leg room could cost £50.

So far the airline has made cuts to routes, food and drink and cabin crew currently on temporary contracts. Ground crew have also been asked to up sell as much as possible at the check in desks in order to make as much as possible from each passenger.

A spokesperson for British Airways said “The move is in line with the airline’s response to surviving the economic downturn, by listening to customers’ requests and looking for innovative revenue streams”. BA’s head of customer experience said “There are various seats within the aircraft that we frequently receive requests for from our customers and in the past we’ve only been able to confirm them on the day but we know people want to secure them in advance and have real control over their flying experience.
