Cuts in jobs and changes to duties pose a problem

British Airways have recently announced and implemented various new ways to increase their profits during the very difficult trading conditions that it faces.

The latest plans, however, have not been seen in a good light and the unions are now threatening strike action. The latest row with the union’s concerns changes on long haul flights which would include cuts to the amount of flights from Heathrow on its Boeing 747’s from 15 to 14. The other contentious issue is the change in the duties for the customer service director’s job title. Currently CSD’s are not expected to serve customers on its flights but that would all change if the management at BA could get the staff to agree to it.

Along with the change in job duties for some workers, BA would also like to introduce a two year pay frees and a request that up to 3,000 employees accept part time positions which would mean a loss of 700 full time positions.

The unions, including Unite, attended an emergency meeting today and a spokesman for Unite said “BA’s actions indicated they are not interested in compromise and prefer conflict. It would be fair to deduce that this brings a strike closer because they are imposing changes”.

BA have insisted that it had no alternative but to make the changes as the industry was facing the worst downturn in business in its history.
