Ancillary revenue to increase

Airlines facing increasing difficulties are looking at new ways of earning money from their passengers. Almost two thirds of the world’s airlines have said they plan on charging their customers for things services such as check in and for taking baggage on to the aircraft. Ancillary charges are becoming increasingly popular; they include charges for in flight food, baggage, insurance and commissions for hotel bookings and car rentals.

The charges are said to increase by a fifth over the next 12 months. British Airways have already ceased to provide some passengers on shorter flights with meals and have increased their charges on baggage entitlements meaning a passenger flying long haul will pay £80 per return flight for a second bag checked in at the airport; short haul passengers will pay £35 per return flight. Budget airline Ryanair has recently doubled some of its charges for baggage check in with the many passengers threatening to travel with alternative airlines. Ryanair made almost £550million in ancillary charges during 2008.
