Business travellers will need to sign up

With concerns over lax security for travellers to the US a new system is about to replace the old paper form 194W for entry into the US if travelling on business. The new Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), enforced by US Customs and Border Protection, will be required by every traveller heading to the US under the Visa Waiver Protection, those travelling with a Green Card or valid visa will not need to apply. The ESTA system has been in operation in the UK and other European countries since August 2008 on a volunteer basis.

Those travelling through the US in transit will also be expected to have gone through the same procedure and be able to produce a proof of their ability to travel through. The new system will require passengers boarding flights to the US to supply personal information about them selves which will include details of their flight and destination, date of birth, criminal convictions and past history of visa refusals if any.

Once authorisation has been granted, a matter of seconds, the authorisation will be valid for up to two years and can be used for multiple trips and can be applied for in advance of buying flight tickets.
