Guidelines released for airport emplyees

The Department for Transport have published an interim code of practice for the full body scanners that will be compulsory for airports. Passengers who refuse to take a full body scan at Heathrow and Manchester airports will not be allowed to board a plane. Officials at Heathrow airport have declined to release any information regarding the location of the scans and how many there will be.

The scans will be operational at Birmingham airport later in the month with other UK airports rolling out the deployment of scans gradually. Civil liberties groups have voiced their concerns over the scans which they say are too revealing and breach privacy rules.

The interim code of practice include the rule that the operator will never see the image and the person viewing the scan must be in another room, the scan will not be saved on a hard drive and cannot be printed or transmitted. Passengers can also demand that the scanner be of the same sex. Lord Adonis, the transport secretary said that scanners would help in the detection of explosives or other dangerous items, he said “If a passenger is selected for scanning and declines, they will not be permitted to fly” he also said that passengers chosen for scanning would no be selected “on the basis of personal characteristics”.
