Cuts will appear over winter months

Flights from the UK to Australia have been cut by British Airways. The flights from Sydney to Heathrow have been cut by 5 per cent over the winter months. The Quantas, BA joint venture currently operates two flights a day on a Boeing 747 and a Boeing 777; they will now replace the 777 with a 747 and reduce flights to a daily frequency on some days.

The additional 747 will fly from Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore. British Airways had planned to reduce the capacity by 4 per cent but due to a lower than expected demand and a steady fall in passengers for 10 months in a row, has decided to reduce the service by 7 per cent. A spokesman for BA said “we have taken some weeks out of the winter schedule simply to match capacity to demand.” The peak months for flights to Australia are December and January.

BA has had to ground 16 aircraft and have made thousands redundant or on shorter hours. The airline has been in trouble for some time and has lost millions. The airline’s pilots voted for concessions that will save the airline around £26 million a year but other workers are still hinting at strike action opposing the change in their working rules and redundancies
