Unite will meet on Thursday
Talks to avert the latest strike by workers at British Airways are well under way. Millions of holiday makers will be affected if the walk out takes place by cabin crew who have voted in favour of industrial action against BA managers who have been forging ahead with plans to shed staff and change working conditions.
Unite, the trade union representing BA’s workers, will be holding a meeting on Thursday to decide the next move. The union will have to give seven days notice of any strike action to BA. BA has been training employees to take the place of striking members if the airline is forced to. The planned strike action that was due during the last Christmas break would have lasted 12 days had the airline’s management not won a legal challenge once it became clear that the union had balloted hundreds of members who had left the airline previously.
The recent vote for industrial action was voted on by 78 per cent of its workers and 80 per cent of those voted for strike action which was slightly below the result last year.
BA said that some progress has been made in the run up to the industrial action during talks at the TUC but that they would “not allow Unite to ruin this company. Should a strike take place, we will do everything we can to protect our customers’ travel plans as far as possible”. Mr McClusky, assistant general secretary of Unite said “With this overwhelming vote in the teeth of BA harassment and media misrepresentation, BA’s cabin crew have made clear that the deep sense of grievance they feel about their treatment by their employer remains”.
