Environmentalists claim court victory

A coalition which includes Greenpeace, the Campaign to Protect Rural England and six local authorities are today celebrating the judgement by Lord Justice Carnwath that the third runway at Heathrow should not be given the go ahead. His decision does not completely rule out a third runway but means that there will need to be a review that should include the effects of climate change.

The Department for Transport did say that it would defend the plan for the third runway. The judicial review, sought by the coalition, looked at the government’s decision made during 2003 which the High Court Judge said was “untenable”. He said “ It makes no sense to treat the economic case as settled in 2003”, as the third runway would mean an increase in carbon costs which would impact on the “economic picture”.

The opponents to the third runway which include the MP for Hayes and Harlington, John McDonnell, said “In essence this judgement means that the game is up for a third runway at Heathrow and I am calling upon the government to accept the inevitable and lift this threat to my community”. He went on to say that what was needed was development in high speed rail. The government said that the expansion at Heathrow could meet environmental conditions regarding noise, access and air quality. The Labour Government gave the go ahead in January 2009 as part of a £9 billion expansion of Europe’s busiest airport.
