UNITE call for further talks

British Airways are preparing for the onset of fresh strikes lasting for up to three weeks. The strike action will begin next week with the first of a series of four five day walk outs during the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend and the half term holidays. British Airways say they lost in the region of £43 million during the recent strike action in March.

BA has said they will not block the strikes through the courts but will put together a contingency plan to keep as many flights running as possible. The strikes will badly affect Heathrow Airport with minor disruption to flights from Gatwick and London City Airport. No talks are planned at the moment but the joint secretaries of the union Unite who are representing the striking workers, say they hoped that negotiations can resume before the beginning of the strike action.

BA are refusing to reinstate 50 cabin crew suspended during the last round of industrial action in March, they are also refusing to reinstate the travel perks to the staff that took part in the earlier disruption. These refusals are a sticking point with the union, UNITE is recommending that members should reject any current deals with BA until they reinstate both the suspended staff and the perks.

BA said it was not surprised “This decision has no semblance of justification. Unite’s officials continue to operate in their own world, showing callous disregard for our customers and their own members in all parts of our airline”.
