New software illiminates "naked" image

Controversial full body scanners could soon have new software added that will eliminate the need for total ‘naked’ images to be produced on the screen. The software should be able to show hidden weapons or explosives, any suspicious images can then be flagged up for an operator to check.

The full body scanners were introduced earlier in the year to Heathrow Airport and immediately fell foul of religious groups and civil rights groups for the invasive nature of the scans which showed the body in clear detail under clothes. Civil rights groups raised legal and privacy concerns about the scanner and the breach of civil rights they posed to innocent passengers.

Rapsicon, the manufacturer of the software say that they hope that the new scanners, which they are hoping to trial in Manchester airports by the end of the year, will put people’s mind at rest. Rapsican said “The system will use advanced software to determine if there is a potential threat. I the passenger is carrying a threat then the image will b e sent to an operator to view and they will then make a decision on whether they can travel”. Manchester airport are also looking at introducing a new high speed baggage scanner using three dimensional images allowing them to scan up to 1,600 bags an hour compared to the current 500 per hour.
