Removal of rows of seats to provide more space

Ryanair is taking a look at the way passengers have traditionally travelled and are about to introduce standing only flights priced at just £4 per ticket. Michael O’Leary announced that ‘vertical seating’ testing will begin in 2011.

European aviation regulators are not convinced that the service will become fully operational due to the current safety guidelines on aircraft. The aviation authorities have no plans to change any of the regulations and have accused the airline of creating a ‘publicity stunt’.

There has been no official request to date from Ryanair to consider any change in the current seating guidelines. Ryanair have suggested they could remove the ten rows at the back of the plane to make way for 15 rows of vertical seats and may also remove the two toilets at the rear to free up further space. The removal of the seats would allow the plane to take an additional 40-50 passengers on each flight. Ryanair have said that a vertical seat will have an over the shoulder seatbelt to comply with current safety regulations.
