US carrier seeks EC and US approval to fly from Heathrow to Boston and Miami.
US carrier Delta Air Lines has filed applications with the US Department of Transportation and the European Commission seeking approval to operate year-round flights twice daily between Heathrow Airport in the UK and Boston in the USA. It is also seeking permission to operate daily flights year-round between Heathrow and Miami, Florida.
The new flights would expand competition at Heathrow, a move thought to help consumers. Airport slots at Heathrow are tightly-controlled. The oneworld alliance, which includes British Airways and American Airlines, controls 47 per cent of takeoff and landing slots at Heathrow. The Star Alliance, comprised of airlines including US Airways, United Airlines, Lufthansa and BMI, has 25 per cent of slots at Heathrow. The SkyTeam alliance, which includes Delta Air Lines, Alitalia and Air France-KLM accounts for just five per cent of slots at the airport.
The slots at Heathrow have become available since authorities in the USA and the EU approved a trans-Atlantic alliance between British Airways and American Airlines. As part of the deal, the government demanded the airlines divest some of their slots at Heathrow in order to boost competition in markets that are most tightly controlled. If the new Delta flights are approved, the will launch on 21 March next year. They will be operated in conjunction with alliance partners Alitalia and Air France-KLM
