Minister assures residents near Heathrow runway use will not change.

The Transport Minister, Teresa Villiers, has assured residents near Heathrow that runway use there will not change. People living near Heathrow Airport were worried that the cancellation of a planned third runway would lead to increased disruption from activities using the existing two runways at the airport. However, the Transport Minister said there would be no change to an ‘all day’ system that could produce more noise.

Hacan, a group formed to represent residents living near Heathrow Airport, said it welcomed the minister’s announcement. Heathrow’s existing two runways are currently restricted to being used either for take-offs or for landings. The assignments switch each afternoon. Following the cancellation of plans to build a third runway, there had been fears that Heathrow would be given approval by the government to change to ‘mixed mode’ operation.

Residents worried that this would mean all day operation. Most flights at Heathrow take off heading west and mixed-mode operation would mean increased noise levels for people living under this flight path. Mrs Villiers, underlined the announcement by saying that any expected benefits for Heathrow from mixed-mode operation would outweighed by the damage done to local communities.
