BAA chairman questions what cancelling the third runway will cost Britain.

Sir Nigel Rudd, chairman of airport operators BAA, has admitted that Heathrow Airport is ‘full’. He adds that foreign investors are concerned about this failure to allow the development of a third runway at Heathrow. The BAA boss said the government shelving plans for a third runway has resulted in the UK’s premier airport being relegated to second-tier status.

He said Britain faced a serious risk of ending up less competitive as a result of the decision not to give Heathrow permission to build a third runway. The decision to not grant Britain’s busiest airport permission for a third runway was one of the first steps taken by the new coalition government after it came into power back in May.

Sir Nigel said BAA’s major investors were unable to understand the UK government’s decision. Those investors include GIC, the Singapore government investment corporation, and giant Spanish infrastructure company Ferrovial. He asked how, if the government would not permit another runway at Heathrow or, in fact, at any airport in the Southeast, Britain would be able to deal with what would certainly be a shrinking portion of international air travel at the same time as other major international airports are expanding.
