BAA boss says Heathrow is a ‘second tier’ hub : 2010 : Gatwick planning to implement major refurbishment

A BA jet carrying 296 people made an emergency landing shortly after leaving Heathrow.

A British Airways jumbo jet heading for New York was forced to make an emergency landing at Heathrow not long after taking off. The Boeing 747 was forced to return to Heathrow after the handle on a cabin door was discovered to be moving.

The jet was in the air above London in the morning when the problem was noticed. Flight BA 117, carrying 296 people, safely landed at Heathrow just 11 minutes after having left. The passengers were transferred to another flight due to depart in the afternoon.

Passengers said people on board were calm but that the drama unfolded quickly. British Airways released a statement that said the alarm was raised after a warning light began flashing. The door in question did not open during the flight and the emergency landing was made as a precaution.

Some witnesses on board mentioned that smoke was seen under the aircraft’s wing and that the plane appeared to be flying too low. Residents of Wimbledon reported seeing a jet flying low as the Boeing made its return to Heathrow.
