More than 6.2 million passengers flew out of the airport last month.

Heathrow airport set a new travel record in September, seeing more than 6.2 million travellers fly out of the airport. This was the busiest September ever for the airport. Owners BAA announced the achievement in a raft of travel numbers just released.

The number of passengers at Heathrow in September rose 7.6 per cent over the same period last year. Not since 2004 has Heathrow seen such a big year-on-year monthly rise. BAA found the most popular routes from Heathrow are those not being offered by other British air hubs. This includes discount flights to China, Brazil and Russia. The numbers of travellers on these routes rose last month by 10.3 per cent, 27.1 per cent and 23.7 per cent, respectively.

Cheap flights from Heathrow to Europe also enjoyed major gains. During September, passenger numbers on these routes rose overall by 11.7 per cent. The most popular routes were Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Despite these huge increases on discount routes between Heathrow and Europe, China, Russia and Brazil, the most popular routes out of Heathrow remained those to Dublin, Dubai and New York.
