Baroness Neville-Jones attempted to carry liquids exceeding the limit through Heathrow security.

The Home Office minister responsible for Britain’s national security, Baroness Neville-Jones, finds herself responsible for an embarrassing airport security gaffe, it recently emerged. The minister had attempted to carry liquids exceeding security limits through security at Heathrow Airport. Perhaps more embarrassing is the fact that Baroness Neville-Jones was in fact headed for a high-level meeting in Washington about the war on terror.

Anti-terror security rules do not allow travellers to bring containers of liquid that exceed 100ml in size onto flights. The limits were introduced quite a while ago. Nearly three years have passed since the limits went into effect in January of 2008. The rules aim to prevent terrorists taking explosives onto planes.

Security staff at Heathrow Airport had to request the minister take the offending item out of her baggage. This reportedly took place only two days before explosives were found the ink cartridge of a printer being carried by a jet flying East Midlands Airport. A representative of the Home Office said that liquids had inadvertently been left inside a bag while the minister was travelling through airport security. The minister removed the container and then complied fully with all following security checks.
