Restriction of containers of liquid more than 100ml to be phased from next year.

Security limits preventing passengers carrying shampoos, drinks or perfumes in containers of more than 100ml will be phased out from April next year. The ban was introduced in August 2006.

The new relaxed rules will gradually come in, starting April, 2011. Most passengers, however, will not enjoy the end of the limits until 2013.

Since the ban was first implemented, travellers have often been frustrated, often to their cost, by the liquid limits, which stop any container of more than 100ml from being carried in passengers’ hand luggage. Mounds of cosmetics products and bottles of drinking water have been confiscated at airport security. At Heathrow airport, about 2,000 tonnes of various liquids were thrown away each year.

The UK’s Transport Secretary, Phillip Hammond, said the initial phase in the programme to relax the ban on gels, liquids and aerosols, would start this April. Travellers transferring from flights from outside of the EU will be able to carry liquids bought from duty-free shops onto connecting flights from inside Europe.

However, even those liquids must still be packed inside clear plastic bags. Also, they will be checked by screening machines. Most passengers will not be able to enjoy the new rules before 29 April, 2013. This is when European airports will be operating screening machines that capable of detecting suspicious liquids.
