Airport overcrowding could raise fares

The Civil Aviation Authority has said that airfares are likely to be pushed up by overcrowding at UK airports.

The agency said in its Aviation Policy for Consumers report released this week that limits to consumers’ “choices and value” would become apparent if ministers do nothing to reduce current strains on numerous airports in Britain.

The report said that the issue was most likely to be affected due to the heavy traffic at Heathrow airport, which officials have said is nearly bursting at the seams after ministers ruled out expansion at the west-London facility.

According to the CAA, fares could be pushed about £10 per return ticket over the next 18 years as a result of capacity constraints, whilst some airports could see larger increases; passengers travelling through London City could see as much as £17 added on to the price of a round trip flight.

Authors of the report said that London is currently “well connected” but that due to overcrowding issues its airports would not be able to adjust quickly to changing global economic trends, unlike most other major air gateways in Europe.

Iain Osborne, the CAA regulatory policy director, said that the agency often hears that UK airports are “losing out” to nearby European hubs and said that Government needed to move to act in consumers’ best interests.
