America’s commercial aviation industry has just completed its safest decade in history.

According to a recent Associated Press analysis of US aviation statistics, 153 people were killed in commercial airline disasters from 1 January 2002 through 31 December 2011. The news agency reports that this amounts to two deaths for every 100 million commercial air travellers.

The figure represents another significant improvement in the industry; the risk of dying in a commercial air accident was 10 times larger in the decade prior, despite at the time being the safest yet for US commercial aviation. And during the beginning of the jet age from 1962 to 1971, 1,696 people were killed in airline accidents, which amounted to 133 deaths for every 100 million passengers flown.

Todd Curtis, director of Airsafe.com Foundation and a former safety engineer for US jet maker Boeing said that although commercial air crashes have not yet been eliminated completely that the figures showed they are simply becoming far more rare than they used to be.

All fatal commercial air accidents in the United States over the last decade happened on regional carriers that were separate and smaller companies operating on behalf of names such as United Express, Delta Connection and American Eagle. The last fatal crash on a larger US-based commercial jet was flight AA587, which crashed just after departing New York’s JFK airport in November of 2008, killing all 265 people onboard.
