The BAA has said that Heathrow saw more passengers and cargo last month than any other December on record.

The news came on Friday via a statement from the Spanish-owned company, when the it said that the UK’s busiest airport grew 2.8 per cent in December, marking the highest growth peak at the facility since June of 2011.

Additionally, officials said all of its airports – which including Edinburgh, Stansted and Southampton – hosted 8.1 million passengers last month and grew 0.6 per cent increase over the course of the year compared to 2010, after adjustments for disruptions ash from the Icelandic volcanic eruption and severe winter weather seen that year.

But despite the optimistic figures, the BAA’s chief executive told reporters that Government decisions leading to capacity constraints would continue to strangle the firm and cause harm to the UK economy.

Colin Matthews said to reporters last week that capacity caps restrict the flow of important trade links between emerging markets and the UK. He added that it means that Britain is handing its trade advantages to other countries “on a plate”, noting that the restrictions come at a time when a lack of economic growth is least affordable.

Statistics show that Heathrow hosted 476,197 flights last year, which amounts to 99.2 per cent of its current annual limit.
