A new report has said that bird life would make the proposed Thames Estuary airport the most dangerous in the UK.

The new study, which was commissioned by the UK government, has said that the prevalence of migratory birds in the wildlife-rich Thames Estuary would make the site a dangerous location for the proposed London airport. Experts said that a high risk of bird strikes at the facility, dubbed ‘Boris Island’ due to the mayor’s backing of the proposal, would make it the most dangerous airport anywhere in the United Kingdom.

The report said that the location entailed an ‘aircraft loss’ risk of one plane for each 100 to 300 years due to the possibility of bird strikes; aviation officials said the figure is higher than the same measurement at an other airport in Britain. Consultants added that the calculation includes measures that could be done to make the area unattractive to birds, including draining wetlands, cutting wooded areas, using artificial grass surfaces and even shooting some birds if necessary.

The warning comes as a new hurdle for the Coalition, which is expected to launch a new consultation on an airport at the site in the spring.

Meanwhile, Simon Buck from the British Air Transport Association said there are additional concerns regarding the site, including conflicting flight patterns with nearby Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport.
