Several carriers have cancelled UK flights amid significant snowfall in and around the UK capital.

Some 30 per cent of all flights scheduled to depart from Heathrow airport were cancelled on Sunday, according to BAA officials. Only about 850 flights left UK’s busiest airport through the day, compared to around 1,230 on the average Sunday. The BAA said that additional cancellations were possible on Monday.

British Airways said that about 150 of its flights were cancelled at the weekend, whilst Ryanair said that 24 flights had been cancelled, including some scheduled to leave from other European hubs including Paris and Ancona, Italy.

Around 10 centimetres of snow fell in the northern part of London at the weekend, while seven centimetres of accumulation were measured at Heathrow. Gatwick airport saw about eight centimetres, although officials maintained that it would remain “open for business” through the storm, whilst Stansted reported some delays.

Dave Britton said on behalf of the Met Office that ice would become a concern for late Sunday night and early Monday, which he said was likely to cause delays among transport networks.

Meanwhile, motorists are being asked to use extreme caution by the UK Highways Agency, even on roadways that have been treated.
